Full Design of a Loadbearing Post-Disaster Structure

When you need to count on a structure when you need it most, masonry is a popular choice because of its durability. Hospitals, infrastructure, fire stations, schools, utility stations are all commonly constructed using loadbearing masonry, however the hoops that the modern structural engineer is required to jump through can make this a significant task for the designer, thanks to evolving codes and standards.

Moderately Ductile? No problem!

Wondering what the NBCC seismic requirements mean for complicated tasks like detailing a plastic hinge? Wonder no longer, as we dive into the practical considerations for this type of design.

Entirely New Section Dedicated to Seismic Design

Whether you are simply looking to satisfy code minimums, or really dive into higher performance systems, we've thought of you when we wrote this second edition

How is masonry loaded during an earthquake?

Whether you plan for it or not, masonry is relatively stiff and strong. Even if you designed a steel frame to resist loads, are you accounting for differences in stiffness that might result in the masonry holding everything steady? Use this to your advantage and design them as shear walls within your SFRS!

Worried about performing a ductility verification?

Not only do we explain the first-principles approach behind what is in the codes and standards, but the book also includes multiple comprehensive examples that can be followed on your next project.

Unlock more ductility with Boundary Elements!

Change the game, and your maximum compressive strain, by detailing steel to be confined in compression. Not only can you reduce loading through dissipating more energy, but you also unlock higher capacity through the use of compression steel.

Minimum reinforcing requirements

There are many factors and requirements coming from different places when trying to understand what you need to satisfy prescriptive minimums. While on your own, this can make your head spin! Let us show you exactly what applies when, and leave the hard stuff to us.

Running into issues with too much axial load?

Conservative prescriptive limits (Pf > 0.1*f’m*Ae) can kick in for relatively pedestrian designs without you realizing. Take advantage of code language through a more comprehensive analysis to exceed the axial load limit for Conventional Construction shear walls.

Gain a deeper understanding of seismic design

It’s one thing to follow clauses and nod your head, and totally differnet to really grasp the “why’s” behind these provisions. Ascend to a higher plane of existence with our seismic design explanations, including a 12 D.O.F. stiffness matrix derivation for calculating the true period of a multi-storey masonry building!

Don't waste it!

This resource contains many prescriptive design solutions that will save you time on simple designs and detailing.

PARTITION WALLS:

Not only do we show how to perform and design by hand, but the second edition now includes simplified tables with the calculations to back them up.

UNREINFORCED MASONRY:

While less and less prominent in modern design, the principles and examples can be used to analyze and understand existing structures.

CRACK CONTROL:

Taking known industry literature and translating it into digestible tables that you can refer to when checking submittals, drawings, and specifications.

LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED:

Stuck with a situation and left “sharpening your pencil”? This resource includes a comprehensive guide in Chapter 10 on alternate analysis techniques

Getting your copy

Delivery or Pickup?

Explaining your options when it comes to getting this knowledge physically into your hands!

When you order your copy, we offer some options for how you would like your order handled. We expect most copies to be shipped but do allow a local pickup option for those of you near the Canada Masonry Centre in Mississauga.

We strive to ensure your order is processed swiftly and efficiently. Please allow up to 1 business day for order processing. Once your order transitions from Processing to Completed, it’s prepared for shipping or available for pickup.

Shipping & Pickup FAQ

How are shipping charges calculated?

Great question. If you’ve shipped anything heavier than a couple of feathers in the last 12 months, you can appreciate how much shipping costs have fluctuated (mostly on one direction…).

We’ve tried to price shipping in a way that keeps things simple (useful for you, but also for us) and also has us roughly breaking even financially. If charges are increased or reduced in the future, it’s because we’ve done one of our regularly scheduled reviews and needed to adjust to compensate.

How do I know when my order has been shipped or is ready for pickup?

Once your order status is updated from “processing” to “complete”, it means that your book is ready for pickup and waiting by the front desk, or delivery pickup has been scheduled with Canada Post or Purolator.

Can I schedule a local pickup from another CMDC office location?

No. We are currently managing inventory from one location and are not offering other local pickup options.

Can I order a book for local pickup and immediately stop by to get it?

Maybe…? We can’t make any guarantees but are happy to make an effort. If you are in the area, please contact the Canada Masonry Centre directly to ask and confirm whether we can accommodate this as a special request.

Officially, the order is not ready until it has been processed and the status is changed to “complete” (please allow 1 business day) so strictly speaking, the answer is “no”, but we have a team of helpful staff who are willing to try and accommodate.

Shipping within Canada

For orders within Canada, we offer two reliable shipping options through Canada Post or Purolator. Depending on your preference and urgency, you can select the shipping method that suits you best during the checkout process.

International Orders

For international orders, please contact us directly. We’ll be delighted to assist you further and provide the best shipping solutions tailored to your location.

Local Pickup

For local customers, the Canada Masonry Centre (who is graciously storing all of our inventory) in Mississauga is open from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM for pickups. Feel free to drop by during these hours to collect your order at your convenience.

Recall that it takes time to process the orders and have your copy waiting for when you drop by. If you have any questions, please contact us!

How Taxes are Calculated

Less straightforward than you might think... fortunately the website figures it all out for you

To calculate the applicable taxes for purchases involving books and shipping, two different components are considered: the tax on the book itself (GST) and the tax on shipping and handling charges.

Taxes charged on the Textbook itself

The sale of educational textbooks falls under special rules and is treated differently than other sales, including MASS software licenses. The portion of the sale dedicated to the book itself is subject to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) only, at a rate of 5%.

Taxes charged on Shipping & Delivery

Shipping charges are subject to provincial taxes based on the shipping address. Below are the rates for different provinces:

    • Alberta (AB), Yukon (YT), Northwest Territories (NT), Nunavut (NU): 5%
    • British Columbia (BC), Manitoba (MB): 12%
    • Saskatchewan (SK): 11%
    • Ontario (ON): 13%
    • Quebec (QC): 14.975%
    • Prince Edward Island (PE), Nova Scotia (NS), New Brunswick (NB), Newfoundland and Labrador (NL): 15%

If you have any questions at all, please contact us before completing your purchase.
